Often known as Moroccan plaster or Tadellakt Marakkesh, this high end finished lime-based decorative plaster is waterproof, which makes it suitable for both inside and outside decoration. Considered to be one of the oldest finishes in the world, Tadelakt has a rich historical and artistic tradition in its own right. Based around Marrakesh plateau, a number of craftsmen plasterers still practice their trade in a family-based fashion. The best examples of Tadelakt are found in former territories of Magreb, or Northern Africa – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania. It can also be seen in Turkey and in the Mediterranean, the later indicating the interest in such exotic finish. Originally used in wet areas, such as baths and showers, it is now more often associated with distinct shapes and surfaces of the Arabic mosque and Moroccan riad (villa with patio and terrace on the top level).
Previously, Tadelakt was mixed in deep warm colours and high level of glossy finish, today it is now available in more brighter, softer tints and shades. The final glossy finish of Tadelakt is produced by applying the layers of soap to seal the coat and make it watertight. Most often, Tadelakt is used for the design of modern shower and basin features, also as bespoke open baths or small swimming areas, imitating Hammam (Turkish bath). It is getting popularity in Europe and across the Atlantic, but due to the nature of origin, the material has to be imported and applied by professional craftsmen. Modest tadelakt pottery will be ideal to compliment the look of the finished Moroccan-style interior.
